Long Island Outlaws Win Boys U-16 Championship at Lake Placid
The Long Island Outlaws 2016 team won the boys U-16 championship at the Summit Classic Wednesday with a 6-3 victory over Academy Mortgage out of Annapolis, Md. Leading the way for the Outlaws was Jack Hannigan, who scored three times and assisted on another goal in the title matchup.
"Today I just thought we played good all around," said Pat Brennan, the co-founder and director of the Huntington-based Outlaws program. "We're a very, very good team, but we've had a so-so summer. I actually felt like we'd underperformed a bit this summer. So to win this at the end like this, I thought that was great.
Brennan credited several of his players for helping the team to an undefeated 5-0 run to the championship. Shane Brennan (Walt Whitman/Binghamton) had a terrific showing in the cage throughout the tournament, while Hannigan, Matt Stockfedder, Josh Goldblatt, Scott Manning and Chris Abbey all made key contributions this week. Face-off man Jack Brewer was better than 60 percent at the X throughout the week and was named co-MVP along with goalie Christian Carlino.
"I personally so much look forward it's lacrosse and a vacation," Brennan said. "It's great up here the kids are fired up."

Long Island Showcase 2013
Since its inception, the Long Island Showcase has become one of the go-to recruiting events of the summer. It has it all: competitive play, large crowds, and numerous college coaches.
The triple-header, featuring some of the top rising seniors, juniors and sophomores from Nassau and Suffolk counties, took place on Thursday evening for the first time at the new St. Joseph's Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Each game was played with 12-minute quarters.
The boys in the east have come to dominate this wonderful event. Yet the junior game saw a different result for the first time in five years.
*All Stats are Unofficial
Leading the way were the boys from Smithtown West.
Between the pipes, Matt Smidt stood tall, making five first quarter saves. A third year showcase participant, the Ohio State bound goalie was aggressive against the barrage of rubber coming his way. He enjoyed every moment.
“I just stepped up to the challenge and felt good all day,” said Smidt.
Defender Kyle Mathie provided solid positioning in front of him. When he got the ball, Mathie was a one man clear. Miller Place’s Brett Osman complimented him with speed and an active stick on the ball-carrier.
Meanwhile, the offense jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first 15 minutes and never looked back. The Bull’s Ryan Keenan finished with three goals and two assists but he was not alone. The accurate Long Island Outlaw, Brian Cannon of Northport (UNC) and physical Evan Gagne from Westhampton chipped in two goals each.
Throughout the week, Suffolk coach Bob Mottasanti told his cast of all-stars entering Thursday to have fun and play your game.
“When you have a group of kids like this out here, its fun,” said the Smithtown West coach. “They all understand the game. They’re all well coached. They get out of each other’s way. It’s fun.”
Nassau found its scoring touch in the second quarter before Suffolk clamped down on the game. Attackman Kyle Cain (1g, 3a) showed great vision dishing around the crease. He does a good job protecting the ball when he charges towards the crease.
“He can really hold onto the ball,” said Nassau Coach Steve Tripp. “That helps him because even though people are pounding on him, he can still find the open guy. “
Hicksville’s Patrick McCormick (UNC) is a dangerous shooter if he’s given an inch. He tallied three goals on the day. Craig Berge and Christopher Brown contributed a pair of goals each.
“Finally it’s great to see Nassau win,” said an excited Miller. “We broke it down on 5-1-6. It was great to represent Nassau.”
This one was close from start to finish. After both teams traded two goals each, Nassau went on a four goal run, including back to back strikes from Carey’s Nick Spalline (Penn State). The attackman would later extend their lead to 8-3 with under a minute to go before halftime. At that point, he had three goals and two assists.
“[I was] just trying to play hard and not too selfish,” said Spillane. “Nothing too personal, just try and get one for the team.”
But the tide was beginning to turn thanks to Suffolk’s face-off specialist Austin Henningsen. From the second quarter on, he dominated the draws, winning 15 overall. The Northport product kept winning clean draws which sparked transition offense. That ignited Suffolk’s second half comeback to tie it late in the third quarter at 8-8.
When it came to even strength situations, Brian Willetts (UNC) and Bray were the initiators, generating off-ball movement and opportunities on the inside. Both finished with two goals and an assist for Suffolk.
The fourth quarter became a thrilling 12 minute contest as the players left everything on the field. What was thought to be a showcase game for individual standouts turned into two teams scrapping away at one another as if they were bitter rivals. Both defenses tightened up as all emotion was left on the field. Longpoles Nicholas DeLuca of Nassau and James Gerdvil of Suffolk provided excellent coverage and ground ball control in their own zone.
Nassau’s Alex Concannon buried two consecutive goals while Gordon Purdie assisted on both. Bray would respond for Suffolk for his second of the game. Shortly after that, Spillane’s fourth goal made it 11-9 and would hold up as the game winner. Jack Sullivan made it a one goal game but no more as Nassau would cling on to victory.
“Our coach told us at the beginning of our first tryout that we’ve never beaten Suffolk. This would be a good year to start coming away on the winning end,” said Spillane.
This match had a slower pace with some physical play. The biggest hit of the day came on the sideline when Georgetown head coach Kevin Warne was run over in his chair by a Nassau player. Credit to Warne who stood his ground, shook it off, and waved back to the crowd with a laugh.
While Nassau battled back, Suffolk appeared to be in control. Coaches Kevin and Jason Lavey kept their team loose throughout the game. They looked fluid moving up and down the field as the offense was unselfish. The majority of their goals saw crisp passing result with a cutter in front finishing the play. Daniel Rooney and Conor Smith combined for five assists.
“Those guys got the goals and the assists but everybody contributed,” said Jason Lavey. “It’s a whole team effort. It starts with a save on the defensive end and comes all the way down [to the offense].”
Jack Hannigan another Long Island Outlaw, who plays for Jason Lavey at East Islip, had a pretty good game. He finished his opportunities on the crease as well as setting up his teammates for their own goals. The attackman finished with two goals and two assists.
After the game, Hannigan stated he just wanted to focus on “being a team player”.
The offensive assault by Suffolk forced the Nassau goaltenders Matthew Deluca and Gavin Tam to be very active. Tam especially looked to be in a zone in the second half. Not only was he strong in the cage but also mobile on the clear game.
As the game wrapped up, the collegiate coaches in attendance seemed satisfied by the days performances. As one coach said, “It’s only one day, but sometime you only need one good day.”

Rising Senior Game
Suffolk’s offense struck early and often while Nassau’s shooters were thwarted by the enemy goalkeepers. When it was all said and done, 14-8 was the final score in favor of the “home” county.Leading the way were the boys from Smithtown West.

Rising Junior Game
For the first time in the Long Island Lacrosse Showcase history, the Nassau rising juniors defeated Suffolk. Eerily similar to last year’s contest, late game heroics were the difference. With 10 seconds remaining, Goaltender Griffin Miller made a point blank save with his left-toe on Ryan Bray to preserve the 11-10 lead. He could not stop the wave of jubilant teammates that piled on him when the final horn sounded.“Finally it’s great to see Nassau win,” said an excited Miller. “We broke it down on 5-1-6. It was great to represent Nassau.”
This one was close from start to finish. After both teams traded two goals each, Nassau went on a four goal run, including back to back strikes from Carey’s Nick Spalline (Penn State). Rising Sophomore Game

Credit to Warne who stood his ground, shook it off, and waved back to the crowd with a laugh.
